Basic cognition,
real-world impact

CoSo encompases several independent research projects at CIMCYC that share a common scientific approach: applying what we know about basic human cognition to understand — and address — pressing social phenomena.

We hold regular monthly meetings to share progress, cross-pollinate ideas, identify synergies, and provide mutual support — especially for early-career researchers navigating the space between fields.

I

Computational approach

We leverage a computational views of human cognition to bridge the gap between cognitive science and social research.

II

Social relevance

Every project connects fundamental cognitive mechanisms to phenomena that matter in people's lives and in society.

III

Collaborative spirit

CoSo's project are organically and necessarily interdisciplinary.

Current projects

The projects currently under the CoSo umbrella share a common lens — but each asks a distinct question about the relationship between cognition and the social world.

Collaborative project @ CIMCYC

CoCoMBU

We address how people form and revise beliefs about economic inequality and immigration in information environments that mix factual reporting with narrative frames.

UNLEARN-CVAW

Wse study the cognitive mechanisms underlying the increasing prevalence of online disinformation about (cyber)violence against women, which reinforces sexist beliefs and perpetuates discrimination in digital spaces.

International collaboration (University of Crete)

BELID

Exploring the cognitive mechanisms that mediate belief updating and trust building in social contexts as a function of political identity.

International collaboration (University of Sarajevo)

Cognition in Cognitive Warfare

What can we learn from experimental research on perception and memory to inform studies on cognitive attacks and defense strategies.
